MEDIA RELEASE – 24th May 2018

TurfBreed commends Lawn Solutions Australia (LSA) on the development of a Native Zoysia, which is due to enter the market in 2019.

Over a decade ago, respected breeder and OzBreed Director, Todd Layt, released Nara™ Native turf (MAC03) across Australia. Since then, Ozbreed turf division has become TurfBreed – and its growers have enjoyed continued success and growth of both native and exotic Zoysia grasses.

TurfBreed Chairman, Sandy Bauman, explained that Nara™ Native’s success wasn’t just limited to the Australian market.

“In the US, Nara™ Native is marketed as Icon™ Zoysia where it has made significant inroads in the market – and we’re expecting it to increase over the next few years. It’s great to see this humble Aussie native making it so big in the US.”

On the home front, it seems the biggest problem is getting production to keep up with demand. Mr Bauman said orders were coming in faster than TurfBreed growers could supply them.

Recognising the rising interest in Zoysia grasses, TurfBreed decided to capitalise on its longstanding association with Native Zoysia turf.

Mr Bauman said TurfBreed was very excited about the current commercialisation of its second Native Zoysia, Jari Blu™.

“Jari Blu™ has a beautiful blue-green colour, much like Queensland Blue,” he said.

“It’s easy maintenance and, unlike some Zoysia grasses on the market, it’s low thatch.”

Like Nara™ Native, Jari Blu™ was bred by Todd Layt. Mr Layt is a born and bred turf farmer and professional plant breeder. He specialises in natives, environmentally hardy exotics, and water-wise plants and grasses.
